Piper J-3 Cub – The Yellow Classic of General Aviation

The Piper J-3 Cub is more than just an aircraft – it’s a symbol of the freedom of flight. With its distinctive yellow paint, simple construction, and open cockpit feel, it continues to inspire childhood dreams and a spirit of aviation pioneering to this day.

Production of the J-3 Cub began in the United States in 1938. It was affordable, reliable, and so easy to fly that it quickly became the embodiment of a “people’s airplane.” During World War II, it played a central role in training American pilots – thousands learned to fly in a Cub. Its nickname: “The Yellow Peril” – meant with affectionate irony.

Technically simple but cleverly designed: with only around 65 horsepower and an empty weight of under 400 kg (880 lbs), it was still capable of impressively short takeoffs. Its forgiving flight characteristics made it ideal for student pilots – and later for bush pilots, aviation enthusiasts, and nostalgic flyers around the world.

Even today, many J-3 Cubs are still in operation, often lovingly restored and maintained. Anyone who climbs into one immediately understands the appeal: slow, direct, honest flying. No digital aids, no rush – just you, the sky, and the familiar hum of the small engine.

The Piper J-3 Cub is a living piece of aviation history – and remains a perennial favorite among the classics of flight.
