At the EBACE (European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition) 2015 in Geneva, the German premium brands Mercedes-Benz Style and Lufthansa Technik announced a cooperation for the design and outfitting of VIP aircraft cabins.
The two companies are jointly developing a completely new, luxurious and holistic cabin concept for short- and medium-haul aircraft.
In the joint approach of the two companies, the classic separation of ceiling, wall and floor is completely dissolved by a dynamic, spiral-shaped room layout. This creates new, independent room zones without the typical aircraft arrangement of seat and wall elements. The novel spatial impression is further enhanced by the strong play with contrasts in materials, colours and lighting typical of Mercedes.
The entire design is characterised by the aesthetics of modern luxury of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Lufthansa Technik is contributing its decades of experience in the individual outfitting of VIP and VVIP aircraft to harmonise this unique design with the special requirements of an aircraft cabin. With this innovative interior concept, Mercedes-Benz Style and Lufthansa Technik aim to appeal to private customers worldwide who have a strong affinity for unique design.
"Combining innovative design and technical expertise is the goal of our cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Style. We want to offer the most discerning customers around the world an interior that leaves nothing to be desired. Whether used for private or business purposes, our modular interior concept adapts perfectly to any purpose," says Walter Heerdt, Senior Vice President VIP & Executive Jet Solutions, Lufthansa Technik AG. The interior concept breaks completely new ground away from the familiar design of aircraft interiors. The interior design organically and homogeneously lines the cabin like a DNA helix. Floor, wall and ceiling flow into each other. The furniture with its sensual, clear design blends seamlessly into the cabin interior and is implemented with numerous innovative detail solutions.
The cabin windows are covered by glass panels, so-called black panels. They appear to float in front of the windows like a corona of light and are inspired by the screen design of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Thanks to the innovative Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky technology, the glass panels can be electrically dimmed from black to transparent. Screens and touch screens for entertainment and information can be easily integrated into the Black Panels.
"Transferring the design philosophy of sensual clarity to aircraft technology is an inspiring challenge. The spectacular architecture of the interior is a testament to creativity and modernity. Sensual surfaces and clear forms, combined with intelligent high-tech, reveal a perfectly formed, modern luxury, which is the defining characteristic of Mercedes-Benz design," explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design Daimler AG.
Over the next few months, the two companies will jointly evaluate general customer interest in the VIP market and further develop the details of the design concept.
