Luggage always in sight: Airtags for stress-free travelling

Since 16 May 2023, air passengers have officially been allowed to use tracking

devices to locate their checked baggage. The Federal Ministry of Transport in Berlin has announced this regulation.

Common trackers such as Apple's AirTags, Samsung's SmartTags and similar devices from other manufacturers contain no more than 0.3 grams of lithium and rarely exceed 2.7 watt hours (Wh). They therefore meet the criteria of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Strict safety regulations continue to apply to larger lithium batteries. They may be carried in checked baggage up to a lithium content of 2 grams. However, they must be completely switched off and not be in sleep or standby mode.

However, if you are travelling abroad, ask the airline whether you are allowed to use a suitcase tracker.

The exact location of the AirTag can be determined using GPS tracking on a smartphone. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) supports an amendment that allows GPS tracking devices to be carried in the cargo hold of aircraft.

But does the localisation work as planned?

In general, there is no harm in placing the AirTag in your suitcase, as it weighs hardly anything and can certainly help you find a lost suitcase. It can also save you time and nerves at the airport baggage claim, as long as your iPhone has ultra-wideband technology.

Please note, however, that the trackers are dependent on iPhones being in the vicinity. Apple's "Where is? app", Apple has an excellent tracking system, as practically all iPhones in the vicinity help with the search thanks to the pre-installed application. However, if none are nearby, it is not possible to locate them.

Complete tracking is therefore difficult with the AirTags. However, in the case of loss, the tracker can at least be used to determine the last location of your luggage.
