First Hydrogen-Powered Air Taxi Takes Off

The air taxi Vertiia, developed by AMSL Aero and the University of Sydney, has

successfully completed its first untethered flight. This electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft takes off like a helicopter but flies horizontally like a plane. Future versions will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells, enabling a range of up to 1,000 kilometers at speeds of 300 km/h.

Primarily designed for medical missions in remote areas of the Australian outback, Vertiia can carry up to five people. Initially, it will be pilot-operated, with autonomous

operation planned for the future. Commercial use is targeted for 2027, with applications

including patient transport, passenger services, and cargo flights. The project, in development for seven years, aims to revolutionize mobility in hard-to-reach regions.
